| Harper's Biochemistry - 24th Edition (1996) by Dr. Robert K. Murray, M.D., et al, was the first major medical text to publish definitive information about the essential role of eight saccharides (a.k.a. glyconutrients or sugars) in (human) cell structure and function. It lists and details the importance of the then newly discovered components integral to healthy cell structures, processes, functions, and disease prevention. |

SUGARS THAT HEAL by Dr. Emil Mondoa, M.D. Dr. Mondoa writes in this best-selling book: "These eight essential sugars, known as saccharides, are the basis of multicellular intelligence - the ability of cells to communicate, cohere, and work together to keep us healthy and balanced. Even tiny amounts of these sugars - or lack of them - have profound effects. In test after test conducted at leading institutes around the world, saccharides have been shown to lower cholesterol, increase lean muscle mass, decrease body fat, accelerate wound healing, ease allergy symptoms, and allay autoimmune diseases such as arthritis, psoriasis, and diabetes. Bacterial infections, including the recurrent ear infections that plague toddlers, often respond remarkably to saccharides, as do many viruses - from the common cold to the flu, from herpes to HIV. The debilitating symptoms of chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, and Gulf War syndrome frequently abate after adding saccharides. And, for cancer patients, saccharides mitigate the toxic effects of radiation and chemotherapy - while augmenting their cancer-killing effects, resulting in prolonged survival and improved quality of life." |

Abnormalities of IgG Glycosylation and Immunological Disorders Edited by D.A. Isenberg University College London, UK and T.W. Rademacher University College London Medical School, UK Foreword by Ivan Roitt Emeritus Professor of Immunology, University College London, UK. Glycobiology has become the focus of considerable research in recent years as the role of oligosaccharides in both health and disease has come under scrutiny. During this period particular emphasis has been placed on the glycosylation of human immunoglobulins, notably IgG, not least because clear links with a restricted range of human diseases has been established. Abnormalities of IgG Glycosylation and Immunological Disorders uniquely draws together the facts that have emerged to link abnormalities in IgG glycosylation and immunological disease, especially rheumatoid arthritis. It reviews all aspects of immunoglobulin glycosylation abnormalities, including the structural anatomy of glycoproteins; the methods used to analyse them; the clinical aspects of glycobiology in both human disease and animal models; the glycosylation enzymes and the genes that encode and regulate these enzymes; and the possible pathogenicity of IgG. The chapter authors have been chosen because of the original contributions they have made to this exciting field of research. As such this authoritative and well referenced volume will be indispensable to both clinicians and basic scientists with an interest in glycosylation, as well as rheumatologists, immunologists, bacteriologists and glycobiologists. |

M.I.T. Technology Review - October 2001 issue - featured Glycomics - Sugars Could Be Biology's Next Sweet Spot an article by Erika Jonietz. "The 1990s may well be remembered in biology as the decade of the gene, culminating in the completion of the Human Genome Project's working draft. And the next big thing in medicine may be the study of the proteins coded for by all those genes. But even as doctors and drug companies struggle to interpret and exploit the recent explosion of data on genes and proteins, yet another field of biology is waiting to break out: glycomics. This emerging discipline seeks to do for sugars and carbohydrates what genomics and proteomics have done for genes and proteins - move them into the mainstream of biomedical research and drug discovery. Introduction to Glycobiology by Maureen E. Taylor, Kurt Drickamer; Paperback - UK.Book News, Inc.®, Portland, OR - This introduction to the study of the structures of sugars attached to cells and proteins presents essential elements of glycobiology to undergraduates and other non-specialists in an accessible manner, focusing on stories about what sugars do for cells and organisms. The importance of glycosylation in protein secretion and stability, cell- cell adhesion, and immunity is emphasized, and the glycobiology underlying human disease is explained to place the subject in a biomedical context. Learning features include simple organization, key terms, and chapter summaries. The authors are affiliated with the Glycobiology Institute at the University of Oxford, Book Description - This is the first textbook which introduces the essential elements of glycobiology in a way that is readily accessible to undergraduates and other non-specialists. It will be of wide interest to graduate students, postdoctoral researchers and faculty members in related fields, who want an introduction to this important interdisciplinary field. Coherent stories about what sugars do for cells and organisms are the focus--particularly the importance of glycosylation in protein secretion and stability, cell-cell adhesion and signaling, and innate and adaptive immunity. The ways in which glycobiology explains human disease are discussed throughout the book, giving it a biomedical context. Illustrated throughout with all new custom-drawn figures, the book's simple organization, highlighted terms and annotated key reference lists make it readable and accessible. GLYCOBIOLOGY is a publication of OXFORD JOURNALS (Oxford University Press). Established as the leading journal in the field, Glycobiology provides a unique forum dedicated to research into the structure and function of glycoconjugates (including glycoproteins, glycolipids, proteoglycans or free complex saccharides) or on any aspect of proteins that specifically interact with glycoconjugates (e.g. lectins, glycotransferases, glycosidases).
Glycobiology is essential reading for researchers in biomedicine, basic science, and the biotechnology industries. By providing a single forum, the journal aims to improve communication between glycobiologists working in different disciplines and to increase the overall visibility of the field. |

SCIENCE & MEDICINE published in its November/December 1997 issue: "Breastfeeding Stimulates the Infant Immune System" by Lars A. Hanson, MD, Ph.D., Professor and Head, Chief-Physician,
Department of Clinical Immunology at Göteborg University in Sweden. "Wether breastfeeding is essential for the human infant has long been debated. Protection against neonatal infection has been demonstrated in industrialized countries as well as in the developing world, where infant nutrition practices often follow ancient traditions. Now there is evidence for a lasting effect of breastfeeding on the immune system, resulting in enhanced protection against infection for many years and apparently in a decreased risk for certain inflammatory diseases". Dr. Hanson identified combinations of five of the essential sugars or glyconutrients as providing the key components to immunity as N-acetylneuraminic (sialic) acid, Fucose, N-acetylglucosamine, Galactose and Glucose. Dr. Hanson has publishedmore than 500 papers in pediatrics, immunology and bacteriology. Cover shown not of issue in question. |

DRUG TOPICS - the Newsmagazine for Pharmacists. "Nutraceuticals Represent a Powerful New Opportunity" the cover stiory of the March 1, 1999 issue was written by Sandra Levy. So many letters on the topic of nutraceuticals were received that the article was run a second time. Accordintg to Rick Kingston, Pharm.D., assistant professor of experimental and clinical pharmacology, University of Minnesota College of Pharmacy, "We are learning there are a lot of benefits to these substances. The only common link between mainstream medicine and nutraceuticals will be the pharmacist. Consumers are making their own choices. The pharmacist is right there where consumers are purchasing pharmaceuticals and herbs and supplements." Dr. Kingston believes it is time for pharmacists to embrace the fact that use of dietary supplements is widespread and that these substances have value. "Alternative practitioners are stepping up to the plate and are becoming experts. Pharmacists have the opportunity to bridge the gap." Pharmacists currently don't know much about nutraceuticals and need to learn more, he said. "They have to embrace these substances or they will be left out completely in this exploding marketplace. They have to keep an open mind and be willing to receive new information and evaluate it objectively. |
